JezMelting hearts since 1986 7月28日 New blog to come...I am planning on setting up an actual blog site sometime in the near future. This blog will likely become obsolete. Never mind. I'm actually working on the blog module for SilverStripe, which I will be using to create the blog/site. In other news, Reboot, a cartoon I watched way back in the day, about characters living inside a "computer" world is coming to the big screen. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i9a352772046b5f139781428f87532dad 11月20日 Games I'm looking foward to playingAll on Xbox 360:
10月11日 October UpdatePlaying with RC1 I've managed to install Vista RC1 on my laptop and it has been running quite well. Within a few days, I've got it set up just as I had it with XP. The power load on the battery appears to be no different to Windows XP. I’m loving the quick searching, especially in outlook. Initially I did have some trouble with the public folders when I copied over all my documents. Copying them over the network was fine, but when I went to copy from public folders to my documents folder it would take forever. Also, in the first few days there appeared to be a lot of unnecessary disk activity, which I assume was Vista indexing everything.
Final Presentations at Vic (Darryl + Nathan) We were quite lucky to be able to get two great speakers in from Microsoft in one week. First Nathan Mercer came in to talk to students about Windows Vista. He gave quite a nice overview for anyone who hadn't seen Vista before. One of my favourite features that I previously saw Nathan demo at MS Student Day was Vista's voice recognition. The following day Darryl Burling came to talk about the future of web development. These were great presentations to be a part of, and I hope next year's Student Partner + students will get similar opportunities.
Job Hunting If you've heard of Google's summer of code, then you know the sort of job I'm going for this summer. A Wellington company CreativeHQ is a 'company incubator' that helps start-up companies work together to share knowledge. They have 5-7 positions available at some of the companies there. It looks to be the perfect opportunity to fast track my skills and learning about industry. Paid too. :) 9月26日 Time to get a jobYes, it's that time again, which for me will the 4th time in my life applying for a job. As part of my degree's requirements, I need to complete 800 hours of industry work experience. The work experience is actually a big part of choosing the Bachelor of Information Technology over a Computer Science degree. There are a few events coming up, where I'll get to mingle with people from the industry, so hopefully I may see somthing come out of them.
If you have any networking contacts you think I'll benefit from, preferably in the Wellington region, feel free to let me know.
In other news:
9月11日 Microsoft Student DayIt was definately an excellent first Student Day for Wellington. Pretty much the whole day went hassle free. It felt like a one day holiday for me. :P
We ended up getting probably more than 180 students. 180 had officially registered, but we got quite a few people that hadn't. Not so helpful for adminstration reasons, but the theatre was nice and full.
I really liked seeing the new speech recognition in Vista. It's now a lot more like how I had imagined the origional XP speech recognition to work. Eg Say somthing like "File>>open....cancel that". The mouse grid is a good idea.
Windows Presentation Foundation looks to be a good stepping stone in the world of interactive graphics / GUI. I think with WPF applications will start being more like the sci-fi UIs you see in movies, with cool animations etc.
It was very useful to hear from actual employers, getting an idea of their attudes. I really like how they said that alot of their new recruits usually don't have the skills under their belt, and thats where training comes in.
As part of my Bachelor of Information Technology I need to complete 800 hours of work experience. One of the employers that was present at student day was one that I had in mind. However, they said that the average preferred employment is 2 years. Perhaps I can work out a deal to do both Christmas holidays, possibly other holidays and work after I graduate. Hmm. 8月28日 Personal/Online SecurityRecently I've had a bit of a wake up call. The story goes like this...
Earlier this month I lost my wallet on the bus coming home. Fortunately the wallet was found, but most unfortunately it was found by someone who decided to take advantage. They managed, with the aid of ID's , bank numbers and signatures, to go to my bank and withdraw a decent sum of money.
I was cunning enough to check my online banking the same day, see the withdrawal made and inform the bank. The police were also informed.
The offender was arrested in quite an coincidental way, when he tried to open an account at a bank in my name with my drivers licence. The bank teller just so happened to have been in my soccer team years ago, and recognised that the person in front of him was not me. The cops were alerted and the offender arrested. Lessons (hopefully) learnt:
But now that its all happened, I've since begun to think about my online identity, and how secure I am with that. I think it would be a good exercise to do a bit of online detective searching about myself to see what I can find out about me. I think I'll go and delete some unused accounts too. I've tried googling my name and online aliases, which I think would make things easier if you could associate someone's name to their online alias. I found it fairly easy to get to this blog, which links to my other one. My mum made an interesting comment that this is why having the same name as someone who's a bit lazy with their debits and credit etc could ruin your credit reputation / any reputation just with the mix-ups that happen etc. I've always used the internet with caution, but you never know when and how something might happen to you. People are very tricky, and I was actually quite surprised at how well this guy did to steal from me. Its currently still being sorted out, but I'm sure he'll be in the lockup for a bit in not too long.
Windows Live Windows Live certianly makes things alot easier, but for me it has just been a matter of understanding what I do and don't want people to view and who exactly gets to see what. 8月20日 August UpdateUni
Wow, University had never been quite so busy as it was in the last week. I'm very glad it lead into a two week holiday.
After the second half of this term I will be begin accumulating some of my 800 hours work experience for my Bachelor of Information Technology. So that should be quite exciting
ASP / VWD Presentation
Rami and I did a presentation on Active Server Pages and Visual Web Developer on the 17th. A good turnout, and a good overall presentation. It was very interesting and I had a lot of fun preparing the material.
Edit: Watching the TechEd 06 keynotes I was aware that TradeMe, New Zealands biggest website runs on ASP, but what I was not aware of was that the biggest website in the world, MySpace also runs on ASP.NET 2.0 technology.
I've made a little goal to get a decently working ASP site up and running by the end of the year.
XBOX Quote (PaulLo) How cool! Develop your own games for XBOX360 6月17日 Free games are coolTwo games I've recently got into are "StepMania" and "UltraStar". Basically they're both clones of "Dance dance revolution" and "SingStar".
I've got 2 xbox dance mats, and a xbox-to-usb convertor for plugging the dance mat into the computer. Yeah... laugh all you want, there's a bit of teeny bopper in all of us.
The UltraStar website has most of the songs from SingStar and SingStar Party. I'm looking foward to seeing this game develop further, as it's only in Beta 0.4 at the moment.
I'm still into playing games, but I like it as more of a social thing, which is probably why I'm hooked on these. :)
Edit
Here's some other free games, that are decent, I've come across:
Trackmania Nations - A free driving game. Pretty fun. Reminds me of slot / tamiya cars.
F.E.A.R - A first person shooter. I havn't played it myself yet, but I know its one of the latest games out. I understand the multiplayer part is free.
Grand Theft Auto 1,2 - The origional games in the Grand Theft Auto series 6月11日 Update JuneHello people, I just thought I'd update you all on whats happening from me.
Rami and I did our first presentation, a combined effort to teach the basics of the .Net framework, and also to show off a bit of Visual Studio. It went ok, definately room for improvement that is. But that's life, and I know they will get better with a bit of practice.
I'm currently in exam mode, with one down, and two on their way this week. Then holidays. Woop.
Next term looks interesting. I'll be learning C / C++ , formal methods and other crazily named stuff that I can't remember.
Oh, the group project. You've all been wanting to read about it right!? It was a good experience. Our team actually worked together really well. We had some minor heated discussion on certian ways to implement things at the beginning of the project, but came out happy chappys in the end. The final product I am quite pleased with. We ended up implementing a scripting-type XML structure for our game logic. This enable us to have more dynamic interactions with the game. For example, player goes to a certian room, and a character would appear in a different room. Basically we had classes for conditions of the game, and then actions to be performed when they were met. Game logic had been in the back of my mind from the beginning of the project, and I'm pleased with the whole thing. Hoping for an A.
Another fairly significant milestone is that I've finally left my teenage years. Yep, it's now the 20s for me. Mixed feelings. Adulthood is pretty much here....but I'll always have a significant chunk of teenager in me.
I've been testing out the beta versions of Media Player 11 and Windows Live Messenger.
Media player 11 is great, an I've only run into buggy sort of behaviour when getting media content from the interent. There's nice little fixes to the UI , such as having the shuffle and repeat settings on the main window now. Edit: I have begun to notice small pauses when playing music. Very annoying.
I havn't really been able to use Live Messenger all that much. Our home router is playing up. With MSN 7+ it would disconnect our router from the internet every time you wanted to sent a file, and with Live it just disconnects a few seconds after signing in. I'm guessing it uses the same port or somthing more often in Live. Just a matter of tinkering when there's time. From what I did see of Live Messenger the main thing is that it looks way cooler, and again there's various little fiddly changes over the old version.
Like the new pic? The face of Microsoft. 5月18日 Connect and VicPresentation May06I recently went to the Wellington connect06 Vista and Office Technical demonstration day at the Intercontinental hotel. It was cool being able to understand a bit better than last time. Jeremy Boyd showcased some Vista stuff that I had not seen before, and showed off some impressive WinFX technology. I may be doing a presentation on WinFX later in the year.
Xiangs Atlas/Vista presentation went quite well. There wasn’t a very huge turnout, and the huge lecture theatre made it seem like even less. Next time I’ll make sure we get a smaller room. I gave some administrative information, and then introduced her. Towards the end students started to catch on that if they asked questions, they would get a prize 5月9日 Computer Science Group ProjectWow, this is my first time programming in a group. We have had a meeting, where we managed to tackle the core of the game that we are creating. We also set up a forum to share ideas and info over the net. The game is an adventure game, where each room is viewable from four different angles. We’ve decided to model our world in blender3d and create renders from four angles in each room. There was a bit of conflict about how to set out the rooms. The original prevailing idea was that each room would connect in a linked object structure. I couldn’t part with my idea of having the entire map inside a 2d array, with ‘null’ rooms where you couldn’t go to. This meant that there would be less effort in the connecting of rooms and creating maps. So we went with the 2d array idea. Fun J.
We will be using Subversion to bring all of our work together, just as soon as our repository is set up.
This week is a busy and exciting week, with the Office+Vista technical training sessions on Thursday, then there’s Xiang’s presentation on Friday, also the usual assignments etc. I’ve also agreed to drum for my mate for a talent quest, that has heats on Saturday, so will be having at least one practice this week for that too. 4月25日 Outlook Power-usageHey guys, could anyone tell me if it is possible in Microsoft Outlook to overlay multiple calendars. Currently if I have two calendars, they sit side by side. I would prefer to have them sit on top of each other, making the caleandar more readable to me. 4月2日 Modelling Java in MS VisioI've recently started using visio for UML modelling. I'm wondering if anyone knows where I can aquire the java datatypes for UML diagramming?
Visio already has:
C# Data Types
C++ Data Types
IDL Data Types
VB Data Types
For now I'm just typing in my own as I go. 3月22日 The latest from JezThe Microsoft guys did a great job with the presentations at Victoria last week. There were good turnouts at all the sessions. I had a lot of student showing interest in the MSDNAA program and am still getting people asking. It's good that students are finding out about the program and taking advantage of it.
I am enjoying having a laptop. It's great for using on the train, and anywhere there's a bit of time to do some work [I'm actually typing this on the train]. Woosh internet should be good once we get it. I've found the university's wireless connection to be quite unreliable.
I'm quite excited about the launch of the xbox360. I've had a few goes of the console in the Gamesman store. There was also a dvd playing of an upcoming title, Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivian, and the graphics look phenomenal. One thing that I thought was specifically stunning is they way the vast forests are procedurally generated...and these forests are rich and amazing. Ah, such a geek :p. http://www.paparra.net/imatges/posts/oblivion2.jpg
A bit about my subjects at university: Comp203 is probably my hardest subject at the moment. It focuses on low level operations of the computer. How the cpu works, all about assembly language, registers etc etc. I think if I just stay on top of / one step ahead in this subject, then I'll be fine. Comp205 is about object orientated programming and design. I just handed in my first assignment today. It wasn't too hard, just the UML sequence diagrams. Info241 focuses on databases using SQL and Microsoft Access. It's been fairly simple so far, but is gradually getting better. I'd say my computer science background has been a big help in this subject. 3月11日 Microsoft Technical Demonstrations at VicThe presentations went well. Paul, Xiang and Ilsia did well. It was a pitty Xiang's presentation stuffed up in both sessions, but these things happen. :^D I had alot of students come to me about Microsoft's free software avaliable through the Academic Allicance program. The coordinator for that will likely be getting alot of requests for software very soon.
Me, Paul, Xiang, Rami and James Carpenter had dinner at an Italian restraunt. It was very filling and very good. Especially the garlic bread. Compliments to the chef. 3月2日 My New LaptopThe Acer machine has arrived. It is very nice, and oh so light.
One thing that I'm not sure about is how to go about managing two batteries. I have just about finished conditioning one battery to run for as long as possible, but I'm not sure what I should do with the second one.
Do I wait for my current one to die a crewl, painful death, then replace it with the other one?
..Or do I get some kind of system going where I keep the other one charged up to be used when the current one runs out?
Played on an Xbox360 at the Gamesman today. Good times. Can't wait. 2月27日 New Laptop DecisionThe time has come to purchase a laptop. I have actually been researching for at least a year now. I went through a Tablet phase, a grunty laptop phase, a grunty tablet phase, a cheap and nasty phase, and I've finally come to a decision. My primary focus in selection came down to battery life. As I am a commuter, I felt it necessary to get a laptop that could last the trip to uni and back, and have time to be used at uni too. I thought my decision was final with a HP Compaq Presario, which would set me back about $1500, but a good deal came up, and I will end up forking out an extra $600. A tablet is just out of reach in terms of price, but I may end up getting one in a few years to come. A small screen was another aspect, so it's not taking up too much room on the train/wherever. Important, but not as much is how tough it is. I'll be lugging it around, so won't wan't it being knocked up. The laptop is an Acer. Looks good. It's just about as wide your average 14.1" laptop, but it's widescreen, so it's not as high. It will come with 2 long life Lithium Ion batteries...so there's my long life. 6.5 hours. 1.73 Pentium M, 2MB cache 512ram at 533mhz 60gig HDD Gigabit lan, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 56k modem 3x USB 2.0 5in1 reader Infa-red, firewire, s-video, rgb 128mb integrated graphics DVD drive XP Pro 3 Years warranty Magnesium alloy upper casing At first glance it may seem you could get something like this for cheaper. And you probably could. But I'm sold for it's robustness, good looks and loads of features. I'll be paying $2100 at hookups rates. Recommended retail is $2400 ($2800 inc Gst), but this dosen't really say a whole lot because they're listed on PriceSpy as low as $2259.45 ...excluding the extra battery however. Here's the page for the lappy: http://www.acer.co.nz/acer/akc/portablepc.nsf/Page/RWPC65C0FDA81A56689CA2570 9F0027FE47?open¤t=10.3&ms=expand& Actually, if you can find a better deal, post the link as a comment.... but it'll prolly be too late, and I'll cry at what I could have had. Remember to take into consideration the fact that there's 2 batteries, 3 years warranty and XP pro. 2月20日 Scary new-ish security threatI know I keep sharing things of Slashdot, but there's such good news. It's probably been possible for a long time, but now someone (Abe Usher) has created an iPod application that, when plugged into a computer will scan the LAN and copy over any buisness-sensitive documents. You could loose your whole company's vital information in a matter of minutes. There dosen't even need to be a keyboard present, just plug the iPod into a USB port, and hey presto, it'll start theiving documents.
I think if I'm ever in a position of overseeing employees, I'd make sure there's no way to physically get/plug into a computer. I believe Windows Vista will begin to address the issue, but what about the millions of other PCs out there.
2月14日 New Technology...this is really cool. This is the first time in quite a while that I've seen somthing like it and gone wow. Watching the video reminded me of the movie Minority Report. I can imagine this technology having many appiclations.
Multi-touch screen: Here's some other cool new technology. It's armour that is flexible, but hardens when it is hit. :O
2月12日 Gaming is good for you?I swiped this from slashdot:
"A body of research suggests that playing video games provides benefits similar to bilingualism in exercising the mind. Just as people fluent in two languages learn to suppress one language while speaking the other, so too are gamers adept at shutting out distractions to swiftly switch attention between different tasks. A new study of 100 university undergraduates in Toronto has found that video gamers consistently outperform their non-playing peers in a series of tricky mental tests. If they also happened to be bilingual, they were unbeatable."
Hahahehe, yay for us gamers. Maybe I should also look into learning another language. 2月9日 The company computer guyIf you're anything like Nick Burns (your company's computer guy) , you're pretty annoying/geeky/funny. He'll fix your computer, then make fun of you.
Did anyone ever figure out what that thing Cliff had around his neck was? 2月5日 Student Ambassador OrientationFor a couple of days I've been up in Auckland, hanging out at Microsoft House. There I was able to meet all the other Student Ambassadors from over the country, and get some good grounding on my role as an Ambassador.
We were treated the whole weekend to delicious food, excellent teaching, various freebies, sneekpeeks at the latest microsoft products and treated to a night on the town and an afternoon at rainbows end. Thanks Microsoft.
Some upcoming events:
1月21日 My latest addiction.....I can put myself into the 'gamer' genre, but I don't play much other than Counter-Strike Source, and more recently Age of Empires 3. But my most recent fascination has been with a MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) , Kal Online.
1月5日 A few favourite sitesIt's 2006 and there is alot coming up this year. Its gonna be great.
